How Is Vitamin D Linked To Dizziness?

BPPV, or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, is a feeling of transient dizziness. It happens because of a mechanical problem in the inner ear and is usually felt when lying down or turning over in bed. If you or a loved one are struggling with BPPV, it might surprise you to learn that low vitamin D levels can also be a culprit, as suggested by some recent studies. Here’s what to know about vitamin D and how it can help.
What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is a nutrient that helps your body build bone tissue, absorb calcium, and regulate many important cellular functions. It also has many important protective functions in your body, including helping reduce inflammation, supporting immune health, and boosting muscle function and brain activity.
Does Vitamin D Help Prevent Vertigo?
There have been early studies performed on the link between vitamin D deficiency and vertigo caused by BPPV, and the results are promising! Since BPPV more specifically is caused by the dislodgment of the calcium crystals in the inner ear, some studies suggest that supplementing vitamin D can help reduce episodes of dizziness. In one study, one group of men and women received vitamin D supplementation and clinical therapy and, after six months, reported significantly lower recurrent BPPV episodes. Although we’re still learning more, this suggests there is a relationship between BPPV and vitamin D levels.
How Can I Get More Vitamin D?
There are only a few foods that have significant sources of vitamin D, like fortified milk or cereal, as well as fatty fish like salmon. Try incorporating these foods more often into your diet and consider taking a vitamin D supplement as well (most experts recommend between 600-700 IUs for adults). Finally, you can get vitamin D from sunlight – aim for about 15 minutes of sunlight per day and wear sunscreen if you’re going to be outside for longer.
