NYHD is excited to feature Dr. Natalie Crossland, Au.D., in this month’s newsletter! Dr. Natalie is integral to the NYHD team thanks to her creative approach to empathetic and effective patient care.
Educational Background and Journey to Audiology
Dr. Natalie received her Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Science & Disorders from Purdue University of Fort Wayne before going on to receive her Doctor of Audiology from Western Michigan University.
Her journey to audiology was an incredibly inspired one, beginning in her undergraduate years when she completed various required courses while studying to become an art teacher. Her love for art, creative solutions, and flexible thinking when it comes to patient care ultimately led her to change her major. Her passion for hearing healthcare was solidified in 2014 when she joined a Fort Wayne group on an audiology humanitarian trip to Zambia. Here she learned just how necessary her profession is.
After completing her Au.D., Dr. Natalie began working alongside the leading audiologist in Michigan for tinnitus management, where she gained invaluable experience and was able to hone her skills for patient care. To this day, Dr. Natalie has continued to engage in continuing education opportunities and is a Certificate Holder in Tinnitus Management by the American Board of Audiology.
Clinical Specialty
Dr. Natalie specializes in tinnitus and vestibular neurodiagnostic assessment. She recognizes that tinnitus management requires an immense amount of empathy, time, and understanding, knowing just how important it is to devote energy to a symptom like tinnitus.
Understanding Tinnitus
Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no external sound is present. This condition is commonly described as a ringing in the ear or a high-pitched tone that plays continuously that only the sufferer can hear. It is a common condition that, in most cases, is non-bothersome but can escalate to be bothersome. When tinnitus begins to affect your well-being, impacting focus, mood, sleep, or other aspects of your daily life, that is when Dr. Natalie steps in to help revert your tinnitus back to a non-bothersome state.
Vestibular Neurodiagnostic Assessment
Dr. Natalie specializes in administering and expertly diagnosing conditions of the inner ear using vestibular neurodiagnostic testing. Tests can be administered for conditions like balance, hearing, and tinnitus and can include:
- Comprehensive Audiological Evaluation
- Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
- Electrocochleography (ECochG)
- Videonystagmography (VNG)
- Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP)
- Rotary Chair Assessment
- Computerized Dynamic Visual Acuity Test (CDVAT)
- Pure-Tone Testing
