Get to Know Dr. Jenna!

We are thrilled to feature Dr. Jenna Trupp, Au.D., a distinguished audiologist at NYHD, in this edition of our newsletter. Dr. Trupp brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to our team, making significant strides in the field of audiology.
Educational Background and Journey to Audiology
Dr. Trupp completed all her studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, earning a clinical doctorate in audiology, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hearing & Speech Sciences, and a minor in Spanish. Her path to audiology was influenced by an early interest in computer programming.
While she enjoyed the logical and puzzle-solving aspects of programming, she sought a career where she could directly interact with and help people. Audiology perfectly combined her love for solving complex puzzles with her desire to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Clinical Focus and Passion for Diagnostics
Dr. Trupp views diagnostic procedures as opportunities to uncover new insights about the human body and to validate patients’ experiences. Her primary clinical focuses are on vestibular diagnostics and tinnitus care, with a particular passion for the former.
Understanding Vestibular Dysfunction
Patients often seek Dr. Trupp’s expertise when they experience dizziness, which can present a variety of symptoms, such as:
- Sudden changes in hearing
- A feeling of clogged or muffled ears
- New-onset ringing or buzzing sounds
- Headaches
The leading cause of dizziness in adults is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), characterized by brief episodes of intense vertigo triggered by specific position changes. For instance, a patient might feel a wave of dizziness when turning to the right side in bed, which subsides if they stay in that position but recurs with movement.
BPPV is particularly prevalent among individuals with a history of bone density issues, diabetes, or Vitamin D deficiency and can be effectively evaluated and treated in Dr. Trupp’s office.
Physical Engagement in Vestibular Assessments
The physical aspect of treating vestibular disorders is often unexpected in the field of audiology. Comprehensive vestibular assessments require significant physical interaction with patients, involving the manipulation of the head and body through space.
The treatment for BPPV involves guiding calcium carbonate deposits (often referred to as “crystals”) back to their correct position in the vestibular system to stop them from sending erroneous signals to the brain. As Dr. Trupp explains, “I have laughed with many patients as we roll them around during treatment, physically navigating that misplaced component back into the area it belongs.”
